Fiber Optical Cable Materials are generally used to manufacture the outer jacket of fiber optic cables to protect the internal structure from environmental factors. Generally speaking, the outer jacket of fiber optic cables is made of low smoke and halogen free materials (LSZH), cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), and so on.
Optical fiber and cable materials are widely used and are commonly used raw materials for the manufacture of optical fiber, network cable, indoor and outdoor micro-tubes and other cables. Our company's Optical Fiber And Cable Materials have a large market share in China and are also one of the cable raw materials that our company exports the most to Europe and the United States.
Categories: MDPE, HDPE (Mainstay for Outdoor Optical Cables)
Material Nature: Semi-crystalline thermoplastic flame-retardant polyethylene
Key Characteristics: High mechanical strength, strong abrasion resistance, excellent chemical corrosion resistance, natural water vapor penetration resistance, and through carbon black/UV stabilizers, it possesses extremely strong UV resistance, maintaining stable deformation within the 40–80℃ range.
Why Used for Optical Cable Sheaths?
Outdoor exposure environments require polymers with extremely strong weather resistance, and PE's environmental aging resistance is among the best of all common plastics.
Processing Method: Extrusion, easy to control, low price, long durability.
Based on cross-linked or uncross-linked polyolefin systems + metal hydroxide flame retardants (Mg(OH)₂/Al(OH)₃)
Material Characteristics: Halogen-free → does not release corrosive gases in fire
High flame retardant rating (can reach IEC60332 depending on the formulation)
Low smoke density → meets requirements for computer rooms and buildings
Mechanical Properties are Slightly Weaker Than PE (due to the presence of inorganic fillers)
Material Science Highlights: A large amount of Mg/Al hydroxide decomposes endothermally to produce moisture, inhibiting flames; Compatibilizers are often added to the formulation to improve extrusion performance;
Application Reasons: Primarily driven by safety regulations, rather than purely material performance.
Material Nature: A block polymer composed of hard segments (MDI/TDI) and soft segments (polyether or polyester)
Key Characteristics:
Ultra-High Flexibility
Bending Resistance →Can Withstand Tens of Thousands of bends without cracking
Abrasion resistance superior to PE/PVC
Excellent low-temperature performance (remains elastic even at −40℃)
Extremely strong tear resistance
Why is it Used in Optical Cables?
Suitable for mobile optical cables, tower-top optical cables, and robot optical cables, exhibiting outstanding performance in high mechanical load environments.
Processing: Requires precise control of temperature and moisture; sensitive to extrusion parameters.
